What is Frankenstein about?
Mary Shelley began Frankenstein at nineteen, during a wet summer in 1816 beside Lake Geneva, where she and friends challenged each other to write ghost stories. It was published anonymously in 1818.
Victor Frankenstein, a young student of natural science, builds a living creature from collected body parts and then abandons it in horror. The creature, left alone and rejected, tells its own side of the story, and the two become bound to each other through guilt and revenge. The full title is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.
