  • First-person story of an orphan turned governess
  • Set in northern England

What is Jane Eyre about?

Charlotte Brontë published Jane Eyre in 1847 as Currer Bell. The title character is an orphan who grows up in a cold, unloving household, then at a harsh charity school.

At eighteen she becomes governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets its brooding master, Mr Rochester. Something is wrong in the house, and Jane must decide how much she will give up for love. The story is told in her own voice. Its first readers were struck by its plain, direct account of a woman's inner life.
